big picture - little picture - repetitions.
In the SBV Beginners classes, we teach all the basic skills and fundamentals. Our philosophy for teaching beginners is pretty simple - Fun First - Big picture - Little picture - Repetitions. Drills are geared toward learning and not performances. We try and minimize the reliance on partners performance in our Beginners classes.
Have Fun
Beach, sun, friends, exercise.... all ingredients to a good day. People in class are just like you.... new to the game. We pride ourselves in providing a safe physical and emotional environment to introduce yourself to the game. Our staff is there to answer any questions you have regarding the game so feel free to reach out to us.
Big Picture
We'll explain, demonstrate and isolate a particular skill by first showing where it fits into the big picture of the game. Once the athlete knows the segment in which they will be practicing, they will have a better understanding and go into the drill with more confidence. Here is where most of the terminology is explained.
Little Picture
Isolating the individual skills and techniques needed to be efficient and consistent. This is the "how to" portion of learning. In this phase, proper technique is priority. Once the coach is confident that the techniques are understood, we'll move into the next step.
Repetitions, repetitions, repetitions!!
We give plenty of quality repetitions to rehearse proper technique. Remember mistakes are necessary for learning and ask lots of questions!
application - introduction to strategy - decision making
In the SBV Intermediate classes, knowledge of the basic skills have been established, but yet to be polished. We refine the basic skills to where we allow the athlete the opportunity to apply those skills live and in real time. Also critical in this stage is allowing time for our athletes to understand and develop the ability to process strategy, visual peripheral cues and other mental tasks all while executing a skill. We also introduce performance based drills, introduce offensive and defensive strategy as well as appropriate decision making.
Painting a picture
In SBV Beginners classes, it's all about learning the skill and controlling the moving parts of your body. In Intermediate classes, it's about applying that skill. For example, once someone learns how to properly hold a paint brush, they can then use that paintbrush to learn how to paint a picture.
Polishing basic skills, techniques and mechanics
We take a bit of a microscope to the basic skills for improved results and consistency. We also teach methods to properly trouble shoot mechanics during non-competitive situations.
Processing in the "next"
In two on two beach volleyball, the game moves at a pace where athletes need to be able to process 2 or more tasks beyond the skill they are actively executing. Our intermediate level classes provide time to
transition scoring - consequence based drills, understanding high and low percentages offensively and defensively and visually isolating the opposing defender.
In South Bay Volleyball Advanced Training, we require the athlete to have a current or equivalent CBVA Player rating in order to register. This allows us to maintain the highest level training environment possible. We look at the game at the pixel perspective to grab those precious few extra points on the opponent during competition/tournaments and lesson the points scored against. We take a look at advanced strategy and how to setup or "bait" the opponent to attack into the areas of the court you want them to and how to transition those into more points. We also teach our athletes how to create offensive options as well as
We teach our athletes to recognize and understand the different types of attackers: High/Low percentage players, power players, shot players as well as first or second contact scorers. We also teach our athletes in Advanced training how to create a more predictable opponent by recognizing the opponent offense and defensive styles. We provide insight to the different ways to pick the different styles apart to to make their strengths, your strengths.
In advanced training, we challenge our athletes in dozens of consequence based drills where they are forced to perform at their full potential in order to advance beyond the drill, the situation or the game.
We take a bit of a microscope to the basic skills for better consistency. We also teach methods to trouble shoot skills properly during non competitive situations.
There is no denying that knowing precisely where the opposing defender is the moment before attacking, is one of the most confidence inspiring feelings there is offensively. In South Bay Volleyball advanced training, we spend hours training our athletes how and when to engage your peripheral vision to isolate the opposing defenders and/or blockers.
Attacking & Footwork Clinics, Passing Clinics, Defensive Clinics and Setting Clinics, Indoor to Outdoor Transition Clinics.
Many time throughout the year, we offer specialty clinics to isolate certain aspects of the game. In these clinics, we have the time needed to truly educate, demonstrate, rehearse and ingrain into muscle memory and apply the skill into a controlled environment and then finally in a non controlled situation. Outside of private training, we see the absolute fastest improvements in our athletes in our specialty clinics.
This program is perfect for all "goofy footers". We take the time to get you into the proper sequence to fix this potentially damaging issue. We have literally retrained hundreds of goofy footers since 1997 through our exclusive footwork sequencing. For those with proper footwork, this clinic is great to ingrain deeper muscle memory, create more consistent timing which allows for more points scoring opportunities.
Education and exercises in the critical visual elements: depth perception, visual pursuit and visual concentration are just part of what we learn and isolate in this clinic. We also dedicate blocks of time to learn and rehearse proper footwork, platform, posture, and balance pre-impact, through impact and post impact.
